Here are some possible funds, endowments, and areas in Communication you can support:

Communication Development Fund - COMDE

Support departmental needs not fully covered by our allocated budget, including student travel to attend conferences, honoraria for visiting speakers, prizes for our Undergraduate Oratory Competition and our Department Undergraduate Recognition Reception.

 

Communication Graduate Student Resource Fund - COMRE

Designed to support the work of graduate students in the Department of Communication.  Assistance from the fund will enable students to travel to regional and national conferences where they present scholarly research.

 

Communication Legacy Fund in Memory of Donald B. Egolf - EGOLF

Income from the Fund shall be expended at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Communication or his/her designee in support of initiatives in memory of Dr. Egolf. Such uses may include, but are not limited to, awards for excellence for graduate Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows.

 

Daniel K. and Amy L. Jenkins Endowment Fund for Student Resources - JENKINS

A $500 award for books, lab fees, travel, or other education expenses for students in the Department of Communication as determined by the Chair of the department and selected faculty members.  Student eligibility will be based on satisfactory academic achievement (3.0 or above) and financial need.

 

Daniel Sedey Memorial Legacy Fund

Income from this fund shall be expended at the discretion of the Director of the William Pitt Debating Union or his/her designee.

 

Friends of Debate - DEBATE

The Friends of Debate Fund is a non-endowed account that provides financial resources for short-term WPDU expenses such as travel expenses that allow the students to experience this wonderful tradition to represent Pitt on the intercollegiate debate circuit, perform local outreach, and convene public debates on salient issues facing the community.

 

Jack Matthews Endowment Fund  - MATEN

Awards for excellence to outstanding graduate students, recruitment of graduate students of exceptional promise, pay for state-of-the-art equipment, sponsor guest lecturers, support visiting faculty, and to finance the costs of short-term assistance for faculty, staff, and students in times of crisis.  March 2005 – geared towards students as part of their classroom experience and faculty but public can also be invited to attend.

 

Jennifer and Eric Spiegel Book Endowment Fund - ESPIE

Qualified student applicants (GPA 3.00 or above, sophomore/junior/senior registered for qualified semester, financial aid requirement).  500-1000 word essay on a topic that focuses on communications and technology. Committees will select three to five candidates from each school and forward the blind essays to the Spiegels who will make the final award selections. $300 Book Center gift card.

 

Marcella L. Finegold Memorial Public Debate Series

Endowment that supports student-led public debates on topics of salient and timely community interest.

 

Robert P. Newman Fund - Dr. Newman (director of the debating union from 1952-1967)

This fund provides the resources necessary to assist with student travel, including supplies, transportation, housing, and meals at tournaments.
