Alexandra Castro Klarén lands Assistant Professorship at The Johns Hopkins University

Alexandra Castro Klarén has just accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the practice track at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Her appointment begins this fall. She will be teaching courses in communication and ethics, the latter of which reflects themes she explored in her dissertation written under the direction of her advisor, Professor Ronald J. Zboray. The dissertation, entitled, “Invisible to the Eye: Rhetorics of Ethical Emotionality in Fred Rogers’ Neighborhood,” poses an inquiry into the rhetorics of the children’s television program from a cultural studies, media studies, and communication ethics perspective. Professor Klarén, whose 2016 PhD in Communication is enhanced by a Cultural Studies Doctoral Certificate, is currently revising her dissertation—based upon materials from the Fred Rogers archive, oral history interviews, and fan letters—for a book manuscript.

Professor Klarén is primarily interested in understanding the ways that value systems and identities are constituted by and through the media and other prominent social institutions.  Her research and teaching interests are rooted in the study of media, culture, communication ethics, and human emotion, with concentrations in cultural studies and human values.
