Honors and Awards

Lambda Pi Eta

The Omicron Psi Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta is an honorary society sponsored by the National Communication Association. COMMRC majors are eligible for membership after they have completed 60 credit hours with an overall GPA of 3.0 and a COMMRC major GPA (at least 12 credits completed) of at least 3.25.

There is a one-time membership fee of $30.00. Membership entitles students to full participation in the society’s activities and functions and recognition at the departmental graduation reception. For information, contact Dr. Meredith Guthrie.

 

Communication Department Awards/Competitions

Annual Oratory Competition

The University Pittsburgh Oratory Competition is a public speaking contest in which Pitt undergraduates compete against each other in one of four categories: Speech on Diversity and Inclusion, Persuasive Policy, Commemorative Values, and Graduation/Commencement. Everyone claims on their résumé to have great communication skills. Competing in a university-wide public speaking contest is strong evidence of self-confidence in your communication abilities. Hosted by the Oral Communication Lab.

The Jennifer and Eric Spiegel Book Award

The Department of Communication is proud to host the annual competition for the Jennifer and Eric Spiegel Book Award. The purpose of the award is to encourage and foster scholarship in the department. In addition to the prestige that comes with the award, the winner will also receive a stipend processed through Student Accounts. Click here for past winners.

The Daniel K. and Amy L. Jenkins Endowed Fund for Student Resources Award

The purpose of this endowment is to establish an award for books, lab fees, travel, or other education expenses for students in the Department of Communication in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. Nominations from the COMMRC faculty members for outstanding students will be matched to endowment criterion. Candidate must be a COMMRC major. Student eligibility will be based in satisfactory academic achievement (with an overall grade of 3.0 or above) and financial need as determined by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Research Opportunities

The Brackenridge Summer Research Fellowships

The Brackenridge summer research fellowships are named for Hugh Brackenridge (1748-1816), the founder of the University of Pittsburgh. They support undergraduate students on the Oakland campus while they devote themselves to conducting an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. These Fellowships are open to undergraduates from any field.

Summer Undergraduate Research Awards (SURA)

Summer Undergraduate Research Awards (SURA) provide students a $3,500 stipend to support their independent, faculty-mentored research over the 12 week summer term. More information and an application is available online.
