Deborah Danuser’s book chapter in Mathematics (Education) in the Information Age
Deborah J. Danuser, a doctoral student in the Department of Communication, recently published her research into the visual stereotypes of STEM as a book chapter in Mathematics (Education) in the Information Age. Her chapter “Subverting Stereotypes: Visual Rhetoric in the #SheCanSTEM Campaign” examines select social media images at the start of the Ad Council’s She Can STEM campaign to see how they avoid the most common STEM visual stereotypes. However, the campaign’s strong avoidance of all STEM tropes ends up creating a campaign deficiency by stripping its role models of all visual cues that they are in STEM.
Mathematics (Education) in the Information Age (2020) is edited by Stacy A. Costa, Marcel Danesi, and Dragana Martinovic. It is available in electronic and print format at the book’s homepage on Springer.com.
