Mary Hamler's upcoming retirement

Mary Hamler will be taking advantage of the staff early retirement option at the end of September. I am happy for Mary, but I will miss her greatly. I know many of us will. Mary has been with Pitt for more than 40 years. She served as the Administrative Assistant in other Dietrich School Departments and Programs before joining us in Communication. Mary was the lead Administrative Assistant for at least four Communication Department chairs. That extensive experience and familiarity with the Communication’s history and culture has made her a tremendous resource. She has a gift for focusing not only on the task at hand, but, as important, how the task bears on social relationships with attention to how it impacts people. This was among her many strong points in dealing with Facilities Management and outside contractors when we designed and moved the entire Communication Department to the fourteenth floor. Mary is a gifted diplomat and skilled negotiator. She does an immense amount of invisible labor to keep everything going as smoothly as possible. Mary handles sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality. I have tremendous respect for her many contributions to the Department and I am deeply grateful for them. Please join me in wishing Mary many golden years after her retirement. Heartfelt congratulations to her on this milestone.

Please join us in Congratulating, Mary!
